Seniors County Qualifying Underway

Hampshire's Seniors team travel up the A34 with little expectations of breaking their duck in never having qualified for the English Seniors County Championship.

This year's Six-man for the Over 55s is the 20th anniversary of the competition being introduced on England Golf's South Eastern Group calendar, but Hampshire have never finished better than third.

"‹"‹The event, which began back in 2005, has been played over 36 holes since 2009 and this year takes place at Heythrop Park.

Hampshire were fifth and third respectively in 2017 and 2018, but since 2019, they have been among the backmarkers with Sussex and more recently Surrey becoming the division's dominant force.

The closest Hampshire have come to reaching the final was back in 2008 at Royal Wimbledon, when the event was played over 18 holes and they tied with Kent, who qualified six times in a row from 2005.

But with five of the six scores that counted leaving the two counties tied on 389, Kent went through by virtue of having a lower sixth score, which was just one lower.

Hampshire have also managed to finish third three times - in 2010, 2015 and most recently in 2021.

Captain Andy Palmer can no longer count on former English Seniors captain Alan Mew to add some star quality to the Hampshire side, which very much relies on two former first-team captains Andy Bow and Richard Elmes.

Both have led the county to the English County Finals while in charge of the Six-man Hampshire Men's side - Bow did it back-to-back in 2007 and 2008 while Elmes managed the feat in 2013.

But crucially, neither were playing captains, and glory in the final eluded both the Stoneham members.

Bow in his time has won the Courage Trophy and the Hampshire Mid-Amateur Championship, while Elmes is a member of the exclusive club of just five players who have won both the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Championship and the Hampshire Seniors title.

Elmes completed the double in the quickest time, by claiming the Over 55s title at Petersfield in 2017 - 15 years after landing the Sloane Stanley Challenge Cup by beating Meon Valley G&CC junior Sam Boyes in the final on his home course in Southampton.

This week's team also features Hayling's Tim Gilbert, who has won the Hampshire Seniors Championship in 2018 and 2024 and played at Royal Cinque Ports before moving west.

Gilbert pipped Mew to the Seniors title in a play off, in May, at Royal Winchester, with Bow a shot back in third place.

The trio of Dave Edmunds (Lee-on-the-Solent) Martin Milne and Phil Dedman (both Stoneham) make up the Hampshire sextet, who will hope to score well on the course at the grand looking Oxfordshire spa resort, between Banbury and Buckingham.

Former European Tour player, Mew won the English Mid-Amateur three times in the 1990s after returning to the amateur ranks, before a sojourn on the European Seniors Tour some 20 years ago.

Since giving up his Seniors Tour card, Mew - raised in Trinidad and Tobago - won the Irish Seniors title in 2019, and was given the English Seniors team captaincy having played for the national over 55s team.

Hampshire have had some success in the South East League, claiming the trophy after winning the final in 2017 when they beat Hertfordshire in the final.

They lost in their previous appearance in the final back in 2010 when former World No. 1 Grand Prix champion Nigel Mansell played for Hampshire, having been a member at Jersey's La Moye after retiring from Formula One and Indy Car Racing in the USA.

Surrey will defend the crown they claimed at Heacham Manor 12 months ago with a team boasted by two-time English Seniors Amateur Champion Ian Attoe, and county first-team veterans David Boxall, Simon Crockett and Nigel Pimm, who have all captained their county's men's team in the past 30 years.
